Fence Material Calculator
This tool helps you estimate how much material you’ll need to build a fence — posts, rails, pickets, screws, and more. It’s perfect for DIY projects or planning your next fencing job.
How the Calculator Works
The calculator takes input from your measurements and uses them to calculate all the materials needed:
- Total fence length – how long the fence will be
- Number of rails per section – how many rails you plan to use between posts
- Picket width and spacing – how wide each picket is, and how much space there is between them
- Post spacing – how far apart your posts should be (e.g., 2 metres or 6 feet)
- Fasteners – how many short screws for pickets and long screws for rails you’ll need
It then calculates:
- How many posts you’ll need
- How many rails you’ll need
- How many pickets you’ll need
- How many screws/nails you’ll require
Then, it adds a safety margin (waste) based on your chosen percentage — typically 5% to account for mistakes or cutting errors.
What You Can Input
You can adjust these values in the tool:
- Fence length: Enter the total length of your fence. (Example: 10 metres)
- Rails per section: How many rails you want between each post. (Typically 2)
- Picket width: How wide each picket is, in cm or inches.
- Picket spacing: The gap between pickets — use
0if no space, or a negative value for overlapping fences (like shadowbox style). - Post spacing: How far apart posts should be. Set to 2 metres (or 6 feet) for standard fencing.
- Spacing logic: Choose whether you want the spacing adjusted to fit evenly (e.g., your fence length will divide nicely), or stick strictly to the value you entered.
Fasteners Input
You can also add:
- Short screws – one per picket, usually 4
- Long screws – two per rail (one at each end), typically 4
These are used for fixing rails and pickets securely.
How It Shows Results
After you enter your values and the tool shows:
- Number of posts needed
- Number of rails
- Number of pickets
- Number of screws/nails
- How much post spacing is adjusted or what’s left over (if using strict spacing)
Then it adds waste — for example, 5% extra material to cover cuts and mistakes.
Finally, the total amounts with waste are shown in bold:
- Posts: total
- Rails: total
- Pickets: total
- Screws/nails: total
All values appear as numbers, rounded up (like a real-world estimate).
Why This Tool Is Useful
This calculator helps you:
- Avoid buying too much or too little material
- Plan your budget better
- Save time and money by knowing exactly what you need before buying
It also handles complex cases like overlapping pickets (e.g., shadowbox fences), so you can adjust spacing to fit real-world needs.
Tips for Best Results
- Use 5% waste as a default — this is standard in building projects.
- If your fence length doesn’t divide evenly by post spacing, choose the “adjusted” option to get even spacing (so no leftover gaps).
- For shadowbox fences (where pickets overlap), use negative values for spacing — e.g., -2.5 cm.
Unit Switching
You can switch between metric (metres and centimetres) and imperial (feet and inches). The tool automatically converts all inputs when you change units, so you don’t have to worry about conversions manually.
What’s Included in the Calculation
The calculator gives:
- Posts
- Rails
- Pickets
- Screws/nails for pickets and rails
- Adjusted post spacing (or leftover distance if using strict spacing)
- Waste allowance
All results are presented clearly with numbers, so you can easily compare to what you’re planning to buy.
How It Looks
The tool includes a simple diagram showing how posts, rails, and pickets are arranged — like a real fence. This helps visualize the layout before you build it.
You don’t need to understand maths or formulas — just enter your values and see the results.
Who Should Use This Tool?
- DIYers planning their first fence
- Gardeners needing material for fencing
- Contractors estimating materials in advance
- Anyone building a fence, regardless of size
It’s quick, simple, and accurate — no need to overthink it.
Final Note
This calculator is not just a tool — it’s a way to plan your project with confidence. Whether you’re building a small backyard fence or a large boundary, this helps you know exactly what to buy before stepping into the yard.
